Fiber optic stress-strain sensing structures use optical fibers, such as FBG and DFOS, to measure strain and stress with high precision, spatial resolution, and environmental resilience.Overview of Fi...
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are widely used for strain and stress measurement. They consist of periodic variations in the refractive index along the fiber core, which reflect specific wavelengths of light. When the fiber is strained, the reflected wavelength shifts proportionally, allowing precise strain measurement. FBG sensors are resistant to electromagnetic interference, corrosion, and harsh environments, and multiple gratings can be arranged in series for quasi-distributed sensing . FBGs can also be adapted to measure temperature, acceleration, displacement, and pressure. Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors (DFOS), based on techniques like Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR), exploit Rayleigh backscattering along the fiber to provide continuous strain and temperature measurements over long distances. DFOS offers high spatial resolution (even below 1 mm) and can be embedded within composite materials, enabling nearly continuous mapping of structural deformations . These sensors are lightweight, electrically passive, and suitable for large-scale structural health monitoring .
Embedding fiber optic sensors in composite structures requires careful consideration of the manufacturing process. Fibers are typically coated with polymers to protect the core, suppress high transverse modes, and transfer structural deformation via shear. The coating affects the fiber diameter (150–250 µm) and can influence local material microstructure and mechanical strength . Techniques such as using thin Teflon films or protective connectors at fiber exit points help prevent damage and delamination during curing or handling.
To translate measured fiber strain into structural stress and deformation, inverse analysis methods are employed. Advanced approaches integrate Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) with DFOS, using NURBS-based finite element models to reconstruct stress distributions accurately. This allows separation of the structure mesh from sensor locations and adapts to DFOS spatial resolution, enabling real-time monitoring and evaluation of complex geometries like plates, hemispheres, and cylinders . The method also accounts for measurement noise and sampling intervals, ensuring reliable stress reconstruction.
