Construction

A typical fiber optic splice protection sleeve consists of:

  • Outer heat-shrinkable tube: Made from high-quality polyolefin, it resists abrasion, moisture, and temperature fluctuations .
  • Inner hot-melt adhesive tube: Creates a secure, waterproof seal around the splice when heated .
  • Strength member: Usually a stainless steel or ceramic rod that reinforces the splice, preventing bending and mechanical stress .

Installation Process

  1. Slide the sleeve onto the fiber before performing the fusion splice.
  2. Perform the fusion splice, aligning and melting the fiber ends to create a low-loss connection.
  3. Slide the sleeve over the splice to cover the joint.
  4. Heat the sleeve using a fusion splicer oven or dedicated sleeve heater. The outer tube shrinks and the inner adhesive melts, forming a rigid, water-resistant seal .
