Step 1: Fiber Preparation

  • Remove the Cable Jacket: Strip the outer jacket, shielding, and armor to expose the loose tubes, leaving about 3 meters of cable for preparation .
  • Clean and Abrade: Clean the loose tubes and strength member sheath with a suitable cleaning solution. Remove excess filling and abrade the outer jacket for approximately 150mm to ensure proper adhesion of sealing materials .

Step 2: Cable Installation in the Splice Closure

  • Select and Attach Sealing Rings: Choose sealing rings that match the cable diameter and place two rings on the cable .
  • Insert the Cable: Position the cable into the designated entry hole of the closure.
  • Grounding: Connect and ground the cable's shield layer if applicable.
  • Seal with Tape: Wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the two sealing rings to create a tight seal around the cable end .
  • Secure the Cable: Insert the sealed cable end into the closure and fasten it with a hose clamp to ensure stability.
  • Cable Identification: Use colored nylon ties to distinguish outgoing and customer fiber cables, trimming excess material .
  • Seal Unused Ports: Plug any unused ports and wrap them with sealing tape to prevent contamination .

Step 3: Fiber Splicing and Management

  • Fiber Loops: Reserve 1.5 loops of fiber behind the tray and wrap remaining fibers neatly within the closure .
  • Buffer Tubes: Use single-core buffer tubes for individual fibers and ribbon buffer tubes for ribbon fibers. Secure fibers at tray entry points with nylon ties .
  • Splicing: Perform fiber splicing according to the specified method, ensuring minimal insertion loss and proper alignment .

Step 4: Sealing Methods

  • Heat-Shrink Seals: Apply a heat-shrink sleeve that contracts when heated, forming a durable, waterproof seal around the cable .
  • Mechanical Seals: Use clamps or screws to physically secure the closure housing, providing a barrier against environmental factors .
  • Gel-Based Seals: Insert a soft gel material that adheres to the cable surface, offering flexibility and protection against moisture and dust .

Step 5: Final Checks

  • Ensure all cables are properly secured and sealed.
  • Verify that unused ports are plugged and sealed.
  • Confirm that the closure is stable and that the sealing method used is appropriate for the installation environment, such as underground or outdoor deployments . These steps collectively ensure long-term reliability, signal integrity, and protection against environmental hazards for fiber optic networks.
