Fiber optic splice box for fiber optic fixing

Proper splicing and fixing in a fiber optic splice box ensures low signal loss, secure fiber management, and long-term network reliability.

Splicing Methods

Fusion Splicing: This method uses an electric arc to fuse two fiber ends into a single, continuous connection. It provides very low insertion loss (around 0.1 dB), high reliability, and is ideal for long-haul or high-performance networks . Mechanical Splicing: This method aligns fibers using a mechanical device and index-matching gel. It is faster and simpler, suitable for temporary connections or quick repairs, but typically has slightly higher signal loss (around 0.3 dB) and is less permanent than fusion splicing .

Preparing the Splice Box

  1. Mounting the Enclosure: Use the provided fixing points to secure the splice box. For concrete surfaces, expanding bolts are recommended; for steel frames, use appropriately sized bolts with anti-vibration washers .
  2. Cable Preparation: Strip the cable jacket and strength members according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure proper lengths of buffer tubes and bare fibers to allow splicing and neat storage in the splice tray .
  3. Securing Cables: Attach cables to the closure with strain relief hardware to prevent movement and stress on the fibers. Metallic shielding or strength members must be properly grounded and bonded .

Fiber Management in Splice Trays

  • Place fibers carefully in the splice tray to avoid stress or pinching. Twisting fibers may be necessary, but follow manufacturer guidelines to minimize breakage .
  • Organize excess fiber length in loops within the tray to maintain bend radius and prevent microbends.
  • For ribbon cables, ensure proper routing according to ribbon type: hard ribbons bend in one direction, while flex ribbons can bend in multiple directions .
  • Cover trays carefully to avoid pinching fibers, which can cause breaks detectable only with a visual fault locator (VFL) or OTDR .

Best Practices

  • Inspect splices and trays periodically, adjusting inspection frequency based on environmental conditions .
  • Maintain clean tools and cleavers, and set fusion splicer parameters systematically for consistent results .
  • Ensure the enclosure is sealed properly to protect against dust, moisture, and environmental stressors .
  • Follow manufacturer-specific instructions for each splice box model to optimize performance and longevity . By following these steps, fiber optic splice boxes can be spliced and fixed securely, ensuring minimal signal loss, organized fiber management, and long-term network reliability .
