Uzbekistan replaces electrical distribution boxes

Uzbekistan is modernizing its electricity distribution system by replacing transformers, upgrading substations, and deploying smart meters to improve reliability and integrate renewable energy.

Modernization Efforts

Uzbekistan's electricity distribution network faces significant challenges due to aging infrastructure, with over 50% of facilities exceeding 30 years of operation, leading to technical losses of around 13% and frequent power disruptions . To address this, the government, supported by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is investing in large-scale upgrades, including the replacement of 1,200 transformers (250 MVA capacity) and modernization of 6,000 km of low-voltage distribution lines .

Digitalization and Smart Infrastructure

The modernization program includes the deployment of 150,000 smart meters and 4,000 concentrators, along with digital substations equipped with SCADA systems and digital protection relays. These upgrades enhance operational reliability, reduce electricity losses, and improve resilience to extreme weather events .

Renewable Energy Integration

These infrastructure improvements are critical for Uzbekistan's goal of installing 25 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Modernized distribution networks will allow better integration of solar and wind power, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 450,000 tons annually and improving electricity supply reliability in priority regions such as Karakalpakstan and Surkhandarya .

Private Sector Participation

Uzbekistan is also expanding private-sector involvement in electricity distribution. Networks in regions like Samarkand, Jizzakh, Syrdarya, Namangan, and Tashkent are being transferred to private operators under long-term concessions. Companies like Turkey's Aksa Elektrik are investing in modernization, aiming to halve technical losses and improve efficiency while maintaining digital payment systems for consumers .

Financial and Strategic Support

The modernization program is backed by $100 million from the World Bank and $50 million from Uzbekistan's Regional Electric Power Networks (REPN), with total investment needs estimated at $3 billion through 2030 . These funds support both technical upgrades and reforms to improve financial sustainability and attract further private investment.
