Planning and Layout

Before installation, develop a pre-determined layout plan considering building codes, equipment specifications, and clearances from other trades. The system designer or engineer should determine tray routing, support locations, and load requirements to ensure safety and efficiency . Ladder, ventilated, or solid-bottom trays should be selected based on cable type, heat generation, and environmental conditions .

Handling and Storage

  • Offload trays carefully using overhead cranes or forklifts, ensuring slings or tynes do not crush siderails .
  • Store trays on adequate dunnage to prevent moisture contact and deformation.
  • Stack trays by type and size, and cover outdoor storage to prevent corrosion or staining .

Support and Mounting

  • Use center-hung supports for easier cable installation from both sides .
  • Maximum support spacing typically ranges from 3.6 m, with load capacities between 318–340 kg per hanger .
  • Ensure supports are level and secure to prevent sagging or stress on cables.

Connection and Assembly

  • Use appropriate connecting brackets and fasteners for joining tray sections, bends, tees, and transitions .
  • Maintain proper rung spacing (6–9 inches) to support cables and prevent sagging .
  • Observe the minimum bend radius for cables exiting the tray to avoid damage .
  • Aluminum trays should not be used as grounding conductors for circuits above 600 A; follow NEC Article 392 for grounding requirements .

Cable Installation

  • Lay cables neatly without exceeding tray fill capacity.
  • Separate power, control, and instrumentation cables as required to reduce interference .
  • Use solid or ventilated covers where necessary to protect cables from dust, heat, or electromagnetic interference .

Safety and Compliance

  • Installation must comply with National Electrical Code (NEC) or Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), including grounding, bonding, and load ratings .
  • Only qualified personnel should perform installation, testing, and energizing of circuits .
