Standard Distribution Box Foundation

A standard distribution box foundation requires a compacted base, masonry support, proper pipe alignment, and reinforced slab to ensure stability and durability.

Site Preparation

Before constructing the foundation, select a dry, well-drained location with good airflow and away from hazards such as chemicals or heat sources. Excavate the foundation area to a minimum depth of 60 cm to protect pipes and allow for proper compaction of the soil . Ensure the ground is level and compacted to prevent settlement under load.

Masonry Base

Build a masonry foundation in the center of the excavated area using random rubble and 1:4 mortar. This base supports the distribution box and provides a stable platform for pipe connections . The dimensions of the masonry should match the calculated size of the distribution box and allow for proper alignment of inlet, outlet, and overflow pipes.

Pipe Installation

Install all PVC pipes for inlets, outlets, and overflow on the ground before casting the slab. Pipes should be positioned to ensure protection and proper drainage, with outlets and overflow pipes elevated 40 cm above the masonry top to allow for slab casting . Use clean 90° cuts for outlet pipes and secure them with supports to maintain alignment during construction.

Reinforced Slab

Cast a bottom slab over the masonry and pipes using a framework of wood or metal sheets. Reinforce the slab with 8 mm rebar mesh (20x20 cm), ensuring it extends around the masonry and sits 3 cm above it . The slab thickness should be 15 cm to provide sufficient strength for environmental loads and potential foot traffic.

Additional Considerations

• Ensure drainage tees are installed on inlets for cleaning and maintenance .
• Protect pipes from concrete ingress using iron wire or plastic bags during casting .
• Consider environmental factors such as moisture, temperature changes, and load when selecting foundation materials .
• Use proper insulation and IP-rated components for outdoor installations to prevent water ingress and maintain electrical safety .
