The basic circuit of an optical fiber sensor

A fiber optic sensor optical circuit typically consists of a light source, optical fiber, sensing element (transducer), optical detector, and signal processing unit, forming a system that converts environmental changes into measurable optical signals.

Components of the Optical Circuit

1. Light Source: The circuit begins with a light source such as a laser diode, LED, or superluminescent diode. This source generates the optical signal that propagates through the fiber and interacts with the sensing element . 2. Optical Fiber: The fiber acts as both a transmission medium and, in intrinsic sensors, the sensing element itself. It guides light from the source to the sensing region and back to the detector. Optical fibers can be single-mode or multi-mode depending on the application . 3. Sensing Element (Transducer): The transducer modulates the light based on the physical quantity being measured, such as temperature, pressure, strain, or magnetic field. In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself changes its optical properties (intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization) in response to environmental effects. In extrinsic sensors, the fiber transmits light to an external sensing element that interacts with the environment . 4. Optical Detector: The detector receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal. Common detectors include photodiodes and photodetectors, which measure changes in intensity, phase, or wavelength caused by the sensing element . 5. Signal Processing Unit: The electrical signal from the detector is analyzed using devices such as oscilloscopes, optical spectrum analyzers, or wave analyzers. This unit interprets the optical modulation to quantify the measured physical parameter .

Working Principle

The optical circuit operates by transmitting light through the fiber to the sensing region. Environmental changes alter the light's properties—such as intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength—either within the fiber (intrinsic) or at an external transducer (extrinsic). The detector captures these changes, and the signal processing unit converts them into readable data, enabling precise measurement of the target parameter .

Advantages of the Optical Circuit Design

  • Electromagnetic Interference Resistance: Since the signal is transmitted as light, the system is immune to EMI, making it suitable for high-voltage or noisy environments .
  • Remote Sensing Capability: The fiber can transmit signals over long distances without significant loss, allowing monitoring in inaccessible or hazardous locations .
  • Multiplexing: Multiple sensors can be integrated along a single fiber using wavelength division or time-domain techniques, enabling distributed sensing .

Summary

The optical circuit of a fiber optic sensor integrates a light source, optical fiber, sensing element, detector, and processing unit to convert environmental changes into measurable optical signals. Its design allows for high sensitivity, remote operation, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, making it ideal for applications in structural health monitoring, industrial systems, and high-voltage environments .
