What is an External Loopback?

An external loopback is a diagnostic method used to verify the functionality of an optical module or port. Instead of sending signals to another device, the transmitted light (Tx) is redirected back into the receiver (Rx) of the same module, creating a closed-loop environment. This allows the device to “talk to itself,” confirming that both transmission and reception functions are operational and that the interface can go Up .

How It Works

External loopback modules are passive optical components that contain a short length of fiber internally looped from Tx to Rx.
